Oklahoma City police release video of fatal shooting

A newly released video shows a fatal police shooting that occurred on August 2 in southeast Oklahoma City near Southeast 74th Street and South Sooner Road.

The Oklahoma City Police Department said its officers responded to a 911 call about a mental health issue around 3 a.m. when they encountered a man with a gun who was threatening suicide.

Officers spoke to 47-year-old Brandon Lena for an hour, trying to get him to put down his weapon.

In the video released Friday, officers can be heard demanding, “Brandon, put the gun down,” and telling other officers, “Looks like he's aiming at you.”

After attempts at negotiation, the officers tried to use non-lethal force to get Lena to comply with their orders, according to the department.

“He's definitely trying to take his life through a cop, dude,” one cop says to another in the video.

Towards the end of the video, officers again attempted to use non-lethal force. However, the department's video zooms in on an area where, according to the department, Lena points his weapon at the officers. At this point, the officers shot and killed Lena, who died at the scene.

The OCPD said the three officers have been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

According to a 2023 policy from the Oklahoma County District Attorney, a grand jury will evaluate officers' use of deadly force.
