HPD investigates reported shooting near USM campus

PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – The University of Southern Mississippi issued an alert late Friday night about a shooting near campus that is being investigated by Hattiesburg police.

The university concluded its brief message by saying, “There is currently no threat to the campus.”

HPD did not release any information Friday evening.

A heavy police presence and cordons were seen near McDonald's, Cadence Bank and the Exxon gas station on the north side of Hardy Street.

The full “Eagle Alert” message, sent to USM students, faculty and staff shortly before 11 p.m., read:

“EAGLE ALERT: Hattiesburg Police are investigating a shooting at the intersection of 31st Avenue and Hardy Street. There is no threat to campus at this time.”
