LAPD data shows rise in home and apartment burglaries – NBC Los Angeles

Crime reports filed in the city of LA over the past four years show that the number of burglaries in homes and apartments has increased by nearly 40 percent, from 5,173 in 2020 to 7,219 in 2023, according to LAPD data.

LAPD Chief Dominic Choi said this week that the number of residential burglaries in 2024 increased by at least 4 percent compared to the same period last year.

“Every family has a right to feel safe in their home and community,” Mayor Karen Bass said Friday in a press release about the recent series of burglaries in the San Fernando Valley.

“I have ordered urgent action in connection with the recent incidents in the valley,” she said.

LAPD arrest data shows that during the same four-year period, from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2023, relatively few people were arrested on suspicion of residential burglary.

In 2020, there were 104 arrests for burglary, in 2021 there were 187, in 2022 there were 146 and in 2023 there were 172. If you compare this with the number of criminal charges, arrests were made in less than 3% of the reported crimes.

In July, there were a number of burglaries in Encino, Tazana and Sherman Oaks, and authorities told the I-Team they suspected several different gangs of thieves were operating in those neighborhoods.

The LAPD said it had increased its patrols in the area, met with residents and assigned special unit detectives to search for the burglars.

Crime reporting statistics were unavailable for 2024 as the LAPD updates its reporting systems. Department officials said this week they expected public access to the data to be restored in the next few months.
