OKCPD releases statement and footage of August 2 police-involved shooting

On August 2, 2024, the Oklahoma City Police Department (OKCPD) responded to a report of an individual walking down a residential street with a handgun.

The incident ended fatally.

Officers arrived at the scene around 3:00 a.m. near Southeast 74th Street and Sooner Road.

According to OKCPD, the suspect did not drop the weapon and after non-lethal shots were fired, he raised his weapon and aimed it at officers.

Three officers shot the suspect; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

On August 23, OKCPD released a public notice that included bodycam footage of the incident.

In the video, officers said the gunman, Brandon Lena, attempted to kill a police officer.

In addition, an officer in the video gives the order to “shoot him again.”

OKCPD states that this order was a last resort to avoid the use of deadly force.

The three officers involved in the incident have been placed on leave while the investigation continues.
