Pinocchio: Unstring poster accused of 'copying' marketing for cult horror franchise

As the Poohniverse expands, the poster for Pinocchio: Unstrung has been accused of being a copy of another horror film based on an iconic puppet.

Thanks to the ironic success of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (a critical flop but a huge box office success), the list of new films featuring public domain characters is now dedicated to the little wooden puppet named Pinocchio.

Alongside Bambi: The Reckoning and Peter Pan's Never Land Nightmare, Pinocchio: Unstrung helps expand the Twisted Childhood Universe (informally known as the Poohniverse). However, the poster for the upcoming horror film has been accused of copying the marketing of another classic flick, and it features another famous doll: Chucky.

Comparing the new poster for “Pinocchio 2: The Wonderful World” and the 2019 reboot of “The Killer Doll,” a Reddit user noticed that the first “copies” the second.

In fact, the two posters are quite similar, showing the respective villains walking away from their victims: Woody from Toy Story in the case of Chuck's Play and Geppetto in the poster for Pinocchio 3: The Wonderful World.

The poster for “Chucky – The Killer Doll” referenced the character from “Toy Story” at the time, as the horror reboot was released at the same time as the release of “Toy Story 4”. Woody was not the only victim: Buzz, Rex, Hamm and Slinky all suffered their own version of a tragic death at Chucky's hand.

“This poster takes me back to 2019, to the Child's Play reboot. They look so similar,” noted one X-user.

“Is this a new version of the Chucky movie?!?” asked another.

One comment read: “1. Pinocchio was already in the public domain, why did they wait until now? 2. This is literally the one Child's Play reboot poster.”

“This is literally just the Toy Story 4 parody poster made for Child's Play (2019) but with Pinocchio and Geppetto instead of Chucky and Woody, and reversed,” said a fourth.

“Pinocchio: Unstrung” is directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield and is scheduled for release in 2025.
