Recently a friend called me and asked if I wanted Hot Wheels from the store he was in. I said no, as I had already bought a lot the day before. Then I realized I had missed the new Pagani Utopia.

But the good thing about Hot Wheels Mainline products is that they're rarely so rare that you have to worry. I just have to wait a few weeks and it'll show up again in a store near me. Until then, I'm thrilled to have found the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 from the Fast & Furious set that came out a while back.

Someone had reserved six examples of the Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL, which was a bit annoying. And I thought I'd save money for something other than the two off-road warriors in this set. Now we're finally ready to see what the final mainline case for 2024 offers. With any luck, we'll see the first 2025 models in two to three weeks.

Treasure hunt

Can you believe we've already had 14 treasure hunt items this year? We've seen a decent mix of collectibles from El Segundo, ranging from the '47 Chevy Fleetline in Mix A to the '59 Chevy Impala in Mix P.

I bought the Ford Mustang Mach-E 1400 and the Purple Passion (ignoring some fantasy castings in the process) and have already unboxed them. I'll come back to that topic later, so let's focus on the Porsche 928S Safari for now. Fraser Campbell worked with Dmitriy Shakhmatov to design this casting for its 2023 Baja Blazers debut.

I didn't like this release and I have mixed feelings about the TH version as well. Yes, this is the second variant of the casting and I'm not sure what I like least: the color combination or the wheel arrangement. I don't plan on looking for it when it hits stores, but I might pick one up if I ever come across it.

Super Treasure Hunt

The Super Treasure Hunt division is even more exciting thanks to Real Riders wheels. You'll see the third Chevy STH this year, following the '18 Camaro SS from Mix B and the 1971 El Camino from Mix F.

Last time I checked, Chevrolet was at the top of the list in terms of sheer number of Hot Wheels STH collectibles, and that doesn't look like it's going to change anytime soon. Jun Imai is the designer of the '83 Chevy Silverado, a casting that debuted in the Modern Classics series in 2008. It reached the Super Treasure Hunt in 2014 and featured a Spectraflame Yellow finish and 5-spoke Mag-style Real Riders wheels.

The 2024 variant looks infinitely better in blue and white, and I've already spotted one on eBay with an asking price of $280. That's only $20 less than the most expensive offer of the old model, but that may change over time. For my part, I'd rather try Mix K's Mazda 787B, which some of my colleagues have been finding recently.

Highlights of Case Q

With those two models behind us, let's now focus on the rest of the showcase. Of the 72 cars, several are fantasy or repeat items, but that's no reason to give up all hope. I'd probably lose my mind if I saw a Bugatti Bolide driving down the street, but I don't think Mattel has managed to capture its magic. Showcase Q offers the third variant in just two years, but is a color change enough to lure you in?

We saw the black Silverado EV RST also in Case P, but it's a pretty cool looking casting and I might get one for myself. As for the Gordon Murray Automotive T.50s, this vehicle deserves a premium version with the right wheels to shine.

I'll wait until the time comes to add it to my collection. I could say the same about the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR, but I'm afraid that moment will never come. This casting has been around since 2010. Can we get a Car Culture variant yet?

The new Bumblebee feels a little better than the previous one, with a new shade of yellow and different wheels. The Ford Mustang Dark Horse is one of Case Q's highlights, and I'm surprised the diecast manufacturer didn't reveal it sooner. It's the work of Shawn Moghadam, and looks stunning in Matt Atlas Blue. When it shows up as Super Treasure Hunt in 2025, people will probably fight over it if it has the right wheels.

Does Spectraflame Vapor Blue Metallic sound like the best option to you? The VW T3 Custom is a pretty unexpected sight, but it's quite interesting. Bryan Zhao designed it, and I wonder if it will ever become as popular as the Volkswagen Drag Bus. Speaking of repaints, some of you might like the new Gulf-themed Shelby Cobra “Daytona” coupe and the Dodge Van, and I think the '98 Subaru Impreza 22B-STi version could make just as big an impression.

I have yet to find last year's Boulevard variant in yellow. The McLaren F1 is also back for its second release in 2024. It's not nearly as good in Grand Prix Red as it is in Dark Burgundy for the Car Culture series. And those Wire Spoke wheels just don't suit this car, but that's just my opinion. Which of these cars do you want the most?
