Nigerian police arrest X-user @PIDOMNIGERIA for allegedly leaking secret government documents

Nigerian police have explained why they arrested Bristol Isaac Tamunobiefiri, also known as PIDOM. Known as X-Name, Tamunobiefiri is notorious for leaking confidential government documents.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Nigeria Police spokesman, said in a statement on Saturday that the PIDOM was arrested in his hotel room in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as part of a well-coordinated operation by the Police National Cybercrime Centre.

Adejobi, a deputy police commissioner, said PIDOM was arrested for involvement in leaking government documents.

The police spokesman said PIDOM was arrested on August 5.

He added that PIDOM's operations were undermining the integrity of government operations.

In a statement on Saturday, Police Press Secretary ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said: “In a well-coordinated operation, operatives of the National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) of the Nigeria Police Force Bristol arrested Isaac Tamunobiefiri, also known as PIDOM, on suspicion of serious offences undermining the integrity of government operations. The arrest was made on August 5, 2024, in his hotel room in Rivers State.

“Several charges are being made against the suspect, including illegal possession, leakage of classified documents, cyber crimes and others. We will investigate the cases with due diligence and care.

“The force will leave no stone unturned to ensure the continued enforcement of the law and leave Nigerians a safer country.”

Following his disappearance on social media, there was speculation about PIDOM’s fate.

However, journalist David Hundeyin said on Thursday that he had been arrested by police on the orders of the National Security Advisor.

Documents also circulated on the Internet indicating that the police were prepared to release PIDOM on bail.

However, Hundeyin said on Friday that police had agreed to put PIDOM on trial and some activists and lawyers were preparing to ensure that he would be released on bail after the charges are filed.
