Morgan Academy quarterback dies after serious game injury

UPDATED: Tellier died late Saturday afternoon

Morgan Academy quarterback Caden Tellier died late Saturday afternoon from complications following an injury sustained on the field during Friday's game.

Tellier's parents, Arasella and Jamie Tellier, announced the news in a social media post shortly after 6 p.m. on August 24.

“Our boy Caden Tellier has come to know Jesus face to face,” the Telliers wrote. “We appreciate all of your prayers and ask for them for the difficult days ahead. Everyone who knows Caden has experienced kindness, generosity and love, and true to his nature, he gives of himself once again. His life touched lives and now, through his death, lives are being saved.”

“We will spend the next few days by his side in his earthly body, knowing that his spirit is rejoicing in heaven. Preparations for a service will be made soon.”

Michael McLendon of the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) initially issued a statement about his death, but later retracted it because Tellier remained in critical condition.

Tellier was injured in the third quarter of Morgan's 30-22 win over Southern. He was flown by helicopter to Children's Hospital.

His condition is still classified as critical this afternoon.

The following message was sent to all Morgan families:

Dear Morgan families,

Last night, our school community experienced a situation most of us have never faced before. In times like these, it is important to support one another and trust in the Lord. There are no words to express the range of emotions you or your family may be experiencing.

We have decided to suspend all school athletic activities, including practices and games, for the next week. We will use this time as a school family to reflect, pray, and process everything that has happened.

We plan to have classes on Monday. We have arranged for several pastors to be on campus to assist students in various ways. If you feel the need to be with your student outside of school, please do so. Monday will look different for us, but our goal will be to provide a place for students to feel safe and loved.

I will continue to keep you updated on any further changes to our schedule. Please pray for the Tellier family and that God's overwhelming love will surround them. Everyone at the school is here for your child and your family. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us.
