Death of a prisoner after a fight is being investigated as manslaughter

Officials at the California State Prison in Sacramento are investigating the death of Darryl W. Hudson on Friday as a homicide after he was involved in a fight.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Officials at the California State Prison, Sacramento (SAC) are investigating the death of an inmate on a homicide charge. Officials say Darryl W. Hudson was involved in a fight on Thursday and died of his injuries at the hospital on Friday.

Five other inmates were involved in the brawl: Darryn W. Mayberry, Robert M. Keller, Tray Watson, Marcell L. Battiest and Otis Wyatt.

Hudson and the others allegedly fought in a lounge. During this time, Mayberry hit Hudson several times, officials said, causing him to lose consciousness.

Emergency services were immediately called and Hudson was taken to a local hospital. Hudson was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:11 p.m. on Friday. Neither staff nor other passengers were injured in the incident.

Following the incident, restrictions were placed on movement in the yard where the fight occurred. Mayberry, Keller, Watson, Battiest and Wyatt were placed in a gated community while the investigation continues.
