SELMA, Alabama (WSFA) – A Selma City Schools student died Friday, the superintendent confirmed in a statement over the weekend.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our high school scholarship students,” said Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd, “Au'Terrious Walter, who passed away Friday night.”

Byrd urged the community to respect Walter's family's privacy and give them “the space they need to grieve.”

Walter, a 16-year-old sophomore, was described by the school's principal as someone with a lot of potential. Counselling services will be offered to the boy's classmates over the next week.

The cause of Walter's death was not disclosed.
