In a candid new interview Machine Gun Kelly talked about the time when his late father was on trial for murder at the age of 9.

Kelly, 34, explained during the Monday, August 5 episode Bunny XOThe podcast “Dumb Blonde” reported that his father and grandmother were charged with the murder of Kelly’s grandfather.

“The story I was always told was that [his] “My dad dropped the gun and his head basically got blown off,” the rapper explained. “This all happened in the room my dad was in when he was 9 years old. So he and my grandmother were charged with murder. They were both acquitted.”

Kelly first revealed this story during his 2022 Living in Pink documentary. During Monday's podcast, the musician recalled having a “very interesting” conversation about the shooting before his father's death in 2020.

“My father's childhood story definitely stuck with me because we slept in the same bed for years,” Kelly said at one point in the interview. “The body, especially if you're intuitive or born intuitive, receives energy from everywhere around you. During the years when my father slept depressed, I took all of that on.”

Kelly further explained how what he “inherited” from his father has impacted his fame.

“I think I portrayed myself as someone who has the endurance to endure all of these things that come with fame, criticism and hate,” he explained. “Because I fought back against all of these traumas by becoming what I always wanted my father to be, which was hard and [to be able to] shake it all off and just fight whoever comes at you.”

The singer “never understood” why his father was “so closed off” as a person – but that’s just the way he is.

“I'm tired and I'm a really shy, broken kid inside and really broken. I'm just trying to fix myself and I don't have the energy to be the image that I was,” he continued. “Because I'm also tired of being alone on an island where there's no one except my fans who can really understand the music.”

Kelly also spoke about how he has “developed a really intense bond with his mother” over the past few years. The singer admitted that he “got so angry at his mother” because of the things his father had said.

“I never heard the word mommy during my entire teenage years. All I heard was 'whore.' And my mommy is the sweetest woman ever,” Kelly said. “Another thing that came with her that reconnected me was realizing that my dad kept me away from her for years.”

Kelly has frequently referred to his mother over the years, who left him when he was nine years old – something he also clarified in Monday's podcast episode.

“I misrepresented her many times early in my career. Not misrepresented in the sense of not telling the truth. I told my truth, but I didn't give the masses a chance to understand her truth,” he explained. “I had no contact with her to understand her truth.”
