Indian Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the regional office of the Narcotics Control Bureau in Raipur, Chhattisgarh on Sunday.

Amit Shah also attended the review meeting of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Raipur.

Speaking at the event, Shah said, “It is the responsibility of all of us to make the country free from narcotics and drugs with a zero tolerance attitude and to implement the Prime Minister's decision. I am confident that this zonal office of the Narcotics Control Bureau will play an important role in drug control. We have set a target to set up a Narcotics Control Bureau in every state of the country.”

He also pointed out that the trend of drug trafficking in the country is currently changing.

“Drug smugglers are switching from natural drugs to synthetic drugs, which produce very small quantities, cause the most damage and are also the most expensive. Consumption of sedatives in Chhattisgarh is 1.45, which is higher than the national average. Chhattisgarh shares some borders with seven states. It is also close to the Bay of Bengal and the coasts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh form a route for drug smuggling. Smuggling of marijuana (ganja) takes place across the borders of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha,” he said.

The Home Minister also mentioned that ganja consumption in Chhattisgarh is 4.98 percent, which is much higher than the national average of 2.83 percent.

“This is a matter of concern for us. Today I would like to appeal to everyone to conduct the investigation scientifically. We need to take a top-down as well as bottom-up approach. If a packet of drugs is found in a small shop, we need to investigate the entire network – where it came from or where it was produced – until it is completely dismantled. We need to work towards uncovering the entire background of drug trafficking,” said Amit Shah.
