According to sources, a police officer then fired a single shot at the man, hitting him in the upper body and legs.

A witness told Loudlabs News NYC that he heard a single gunshot, followed by a series of return shots, which he attributed to police.

“If he had a gun, if he didn't have a gun and they thought it was a gun, then what's wrong with the Tasers? Why can't you use the Taser? Why do you always have to go for the damn gun when you have a Taser,” said the man, who did not give his name.

Emergency services performed CPR on the suspect and took him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses said the suspect was black.

A weapon was seized at the crime scene, police said.
