Prime Minister Narendra Modi amid rape and murder protests in Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government would not spare anyone who commits crimes against women

New Delhi:

Amid widespread outrage over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at a Kolkata hospital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today pledged strict action against crimes against women.

“The safety of women is very important. I will once again tell all state governments that crimes against women are unforgivable. Whoever the perpetrator is, he must not be spared,” Prime Minister Modi said today at the 'Lakhpati Didi Sammelan' in Jalgaon, Maharashtra.

The Modi government describes a “Lakhpati Didi” as a member of a self-help group whose household income is Rs 100,000 or more. This income is calculated for at least four agricultural seasons and/or economic cycles, with the average monthly income exceeding Rs 10,000 to make it sustainable.

“We are strengthening laws to ensure that those who commit crimes against women are severely punished,” Prime Minister Modi said.

The rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata sparked nationwide protests and led to a bitter political battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress Party in West Bengal and BJP leaders over deteriorating women's safety.

Speaking at the event in Jalgaon, Prime Minister Modi said his government had done more for women in the last decade than any previous regime since independence.

“Until 2014, loans worth less than Rs 25 billion were being provided to women's self-help groups, but in the last ten years, the figure has risen to Rs 9 billion,” said Prime Minister Modi.

He spoke in support of the BJP-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra and asked the people to pledge their support for many years to come in the interests of stability and prosperity. “Maharashtra is the shining star of a developed India. The future of the state lies in more investment and job growth,” said Prime Minister Modi.
