10-year-old dies in car crash after suspect steals SUV in Plainville, police say – Boston 25 News

A child is dead after a suspect stole a vehicle and crashed it into a car on Route 495 in Plainville.

According to state police, 42-year-old Michael Escolas of Oxford stole a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a parking lot near Gillette Stadium around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Escolas was traveling at a high rate of speed when he collided with a Nissan Altima that was stopped at a red light near the intersection of Route 1 and Interstate 495.

A family of six was in the Nissan, including a mother, a father and their four children. All occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries; a ten-year-old child was pronounced dead in hospital.

In addition to the Nissan, four other cars were damaged in the accident, including the Jeep.

State police monitoring the Kenny Chesney concert at Gillette Stadium arrived at the scene.

Escolas was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital with injuries, where he remains in custody, state police said.

Route 1 southbound at Route 495 with I-495 and the I-495 exits onto Route 1 northbound and southbound were closed while emergency crews investigate.

Due to the child's age, his identity will not be released at this time, state police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates as more information becomes available.
