Mikel Arteta confirms Gabriel Jesus injury changes Arsenal's transfer plans

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed his plan to sign a new striker before the Premier League transfer window closes on August 30.

The Gunners have already signed David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori as part of a summer squad rebuild, with Spanish international Mikel Merino set to arrive in the next few days.

Arsenal have started the new EPL season with two consecutive 2-0 wins, with Leandro Trossard coming on as a substitute to secure victory at Aston Villa this weekend.

Over the last two seasons, Arsenal have finished second behind champions Manchester City and have also scored fewer EPL goals than Pep Guardiola's team.

This has led to voices claiming that Arsenal need an experienced striker to strengthen their attack. Bukayo Saka was Arsenal's top league scorer last season with 16 goals.

Brazilian star Gabriel Jesus had to sit out the game against Villa due to injury and his absence triggered a change of heart in Arteta.

“We are really happy with the squad. It's true that we had a problem with Gabriel Jesus and we missed him. We have a few players less, but if we can do something, we will,” said the Daily Mirror in their post-match statements.

Eddie Nketiah is expected to move before the transfer window closes with Nottingham Forest close to a deal, but Arteta was unwilling to give any indication as to who his new target might be.
