Fire brigade responds to incident involving “chemical reaction” in production plant

BATTLE CREEK, MI – Firefighters were able to safely contain a chemical reaction at a manufacturing facility, Battle Creek fire officials said.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident on Saturday, August 24.

Firefighters initially responded to a report at 11:33 a.m. of a hazardous materials incident Saturday at TC Transcontinental Packaging, 155 Brooks St.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered a 200-litre drum of waste material that had undergone a chemical reaction and was overheating.

Using specialized equipment such as thermal imaging cameras and aerial monitoring devices, emergency crews ensured the barrel could be moved safely. Firefighters then mitigated the chemical reaction and removed the remaining material from the structure.

Officials said the incident was resolved after about an hour and a half.
