Dolphins release ex-Jets QB Mike White as he loses job as backup player

Mike White is on the open market.

The former Jets quarterback was released by the Dolphins on Sunday as the team must trim its roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET Tuesday.

White battled Skylar Thompson for the job as the Dolphins' backup quarterback behind Tua Tagovailoa, but Thompson got the upper hand.

White, a former fifth-round pick of the Cowboys in 2018, was signed to the Jets' practice squad in 2019 and briefly became a fan and locker room favorite during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.

Replacing the injured Zach Wilson, White, who started for the first time in his career, led the Jets to an impressive 34-31 victory over the Bengals on October 21, 2021.

This year he started in two more games, but lost both.

A year later, White started in four more games, but achieved a result of 1:3.

During his time with the Jets, White completed 62.6 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

He signed with the Dolphins last year and served as Tagovailoa's backup.

White completed 5 of 9 passes for 37 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Thompson completed 19 of 27 passes for 190 yards, scoring two touchdowns and one interception.

In the entire preseason, White completed only 20 of 43 passes for 179 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.
