Emergency crews investigate ammonia leak at Reddy Ice in south Fort Myers

Right now our NBC-2 crews are on the scene where there is a *** possible hazmat situation. So it's happening here near Metro Parkway in Fort Myers. Thank you for joining NBC-2 News tonight. I'm Elise Chri. We'd like to turn right over to Mohammed Abdul Kawi Mohammed from NBC 2. We know you were on the scene. Tell us exactly what you're seeing there. Before I get to that, at least the battalion commander that I spoke with confirmed it was an ammonia leak. He also added that there are no injuries, but as you can see behind me, *** many fire crews are here on the scene right now. We are currently at the Nature's Own Bakery location on Metro Parkway, about *** miles or two from the Ready Ice Plant. Multiple crews have headed to the scene because *** ammonia odor was reported. The battalion commander has instructed us to stand back as much as possible for safety reasons. We're told the leak has been closed and teams have been taking their time ventilating the area. Regional risk control will be here in about *** minutes, tonight to be exact, to make sure everything is clear. The cause of the leak is still under investigation and as soon as we have more information we will be sure to let you know. Multiple fire crews responded to an ammonia leak from a tank outside the Reddy Ice building on Metro Parkway in south Fort Myers Saturday night. According to the South Trail Fire and Rescue District, crews began investigating after receiving reports of a strange ammonia smell in the area. The leak was stopped about 30 minutes after the initial call. South Trail Fire told NBC2 the cause of the leak is still under investigation. There were no injuries.
