Driver arrested for drunk driving after hitting runner crossing street in Pacific Beach

A driver was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of drunken driving after allegedly hitting and killing a man who was running across a street in the middle of a city block in Pacific Beach, police said.

The deceased man was running east on Mission Bay Drive near De Anza Cove Park when he was struck around 8:55 p.m. He died before he could be taken to a hospital, San Diego police said.

According to police, the victim was running down Mission Bay Drive when the driver of a large pickup truck traveling south in the right lane spotted him and stopped him.

The man continued running and was struck in the fast lane by a 2003 Subaru WRX, driven by a 23-year-old man. The man told police that he did not see the pedestrian because the pickup truck was in his way.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Subaru was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. No further information was released.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
