Palace rarely comments on Princess Kate's cancer treatment despite viral rumors

Months after Princess Kate announced she had been diagnosed with cancer, conspiracy theories and rumors about the Queen's whereabouts have continued to circulate. One in particular has taken hold on social media: people speculate that Kate has not been seen in the United Kingdom in recent months because she is not in the country. Instead, these people claim, the Princess has been in the United States – specifically in Houston, where she was being treated at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Kensington Palace has declared these rumors false.

In an article published on Monday, a palace spokesperson denied to the Houston Chronicle that Kate was undergoing treatment at the cancer center. Representatives of the Texas facility – which is known for its work in cancer research and treatment and has treated prominent patients such as the late rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen and tennis star Chris Evert – meanwhile declined to comment due to patient privacy concerns.

Kate made her last public appearance on December 25, when she made the traditional walk to the Christmas service at Sandringham along with other members of the royal family.

While some tabloids have speculated whether Kate will ever return to full-time royal duties, a source told Bazaar that claims she will not are “unfair and untrue.”

“There is no information on Kate's 'return' as the focus at the moment is 100 percent on her health – to say she is not returning to her role is unfair and untrue,” the source said. “Conversations of that nature are simply not being had. When the time is right, she will return to work.”

Kate personally announced her cancer diagnosis in a video message posted to social media on March 22. “As you can imagine, this has taken some time. I've needed time to recover from major surgery and start treatment. But most importantly, we've needed time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that's appropriate for them and to reassure them that I'm going to be OK,” she said in the clip. “As I told them, I'm OK and I'm getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal mentally, physically and spiritually.”

The palace did not specify the type of cancer or its advanced stage, but the princess said in the video that she was in the “early stages” of “preventive chemotherapy.”
