Rutgers-UMass football brawl video: Scarlet Knights' Gia Girman ejected after being hit in an on-field brawl

An otherwise normal women's soccer game between Rutgers and UMass briefly descended into chaos on Sunday when violent blows broke out.

UMass' Ashley Lamond appeared to be bothered by a foul by Rutgers' Gia Girman and ran over to confront the Scarlet Knights forward, who did not receive her kindly. Punches were exchanged and Lamond was eventually tackled to the ground before both were ejected.

UMass beat Rutgers 1-0, but Girman seemed to have the upper hand over Lamond in the fight.

Punches were fired in the 36th minute of Sunday's women's soccer game between Rutgers and UMass.

Girman appeared to be trying to recover the ball, but instead took down a UMass player, who fell hard to the turf. Girman also landed on the ground, and Lamond had her face in her as she got to her feet.

Girman threw Lamond back to the field and appeared to land a punch while the two were still standing and again when she had Lamond on the ground.

Both Girman and Lamond received a red card. Girman initially seemed surprised when she saw the red card, but quickly left the field.

Brian Fonseca of NJ Advance Media reported that Girman will “likely” be suspended two games for her role. Girman, a senior, scored two goals in 17 games in 2023 and started Rutgers' first three games this season.

UMass took the lead in the 81st minute of Sunday's game with a goal from Bella Recinos and secured the home win.
