Searsports fundraiser benefits dogs seized in cases of animal cruelty

SEARSPORT, Maine (WABI) – Local businesses that previously supported Coastal Dreams Rescue and Sanctuary joined forces to raise money for dogs who were victims of animal cruelty.

A silent auction and fundraiser took place at H & H Mercantile in Searsport on Sunday.

Many local businesses, such as Portable Pie Place, helped organize the event.

Earlier this month, 27 dogs were seized from Coastal Dreams Rescue who were living in poor conditions. The owner of the animal shelter is currently accused of serious animal cruelty.

Organizers hope that the money raised at the event will fill the gap.

“This is a big day for us to heal the wounds. We are obviously devastated by the news and we know that so many animals were hurt and in distress while we thought we were helping,” says Jessica Schramm of Portable Pie Place.

“In this way, we were able to turn all the anger about all the terrible things that happen to these animals into something positive. And the money we earn today we will spend on medical care, food, beds and everything that these dogs lacked,” said Schramm.
