Preacher who promised “Miracle Mansion” to Charlotte church sentenced to prison

Michael Baldwin, a pastor accused of defrauding Charlotte church members of more than $300,000, was sentenced Tuesday to 27 months in prison and three years of probation.

“Preachers must understand that they too can go to prison,” said Federal Judge Max Cogburn.

Baldwin, 55, of Virginia, organized an investment scheme worth $800,000, according to U.S. Attorney Dena King. In 2022, a jury found him guilty of wire fraud and securities fraud.

For years, he raised the money, ostensibly to build “Miracle Mansion,” a family entertainment venue based on Christian values. But much of the funds were used for his travel, meals, credit cards and more, the Charlotte Observer previously reported.

Nearly half of the funds — $370,000, according to court records — came from Charlotte's Harbor Baptist Church.

Two longtime members of Harbor Baptist Church said Tuesday they want the money back. One said the church is in poor condition.

Baldwin tried to make amends and pay back the debt, he said, explaining that his only mistake was not being a better businessman.

“I will not admit to something I have never done,” he said before Cogburn sentenced him. “I must stand before an all-powerful judge.”

The pews in the courtroom were filled with family and friends, and they occasionally said “Amen” as he defended his character and appealed to the Bible.

“It is no excuse that you are not good with money,” the judge told him.
