Felon arrested with gun at Safeway in Millbrae

MILLBRAE – San Mateo County sheriff's officials have arrested a man who authorities say brandished a gun outside a Safeway Sunday afternoon.

In a statement, the sheriff's office said the 36-year-old man they arrested is a convicted felon who is prohibited from possessing a gun. Authorities said officers arrested him on suspicion of use of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a person with a criminal record, possession of ammunition by a felon, carrying a loaded weapon in a vehicle, concealed possession of a weapon in a car and child abuse.

Officers stopped him as he drove south on El Camino Real, and the man surrendered without incident, authorities said, adding that they found a loaded gun in the car after his arrest.

They were called to a Safeway in the 500 block of El Camino Real around 1 p.m., where a man was brandishing a gun in the parking lot. The person then sped away, authorities said.

Authorities did not initially disclose the reason for the child abuse charges.

El Camino Real was closed in both directions for about 30 minutes.
