Gasoline prices fall by nearly 15 cents per gallon just in time for Labor Day

According to a GasBuddy survey of 170 Chattanooga gas stations, average gasoline prices in Chattanooga have fallen 14.8 cents per gallon over the past week and are now averaging $2.75 per gallon.

Prices in Chattanooga are 20.2 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and 54.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price for diesel has fallen 3.2 cents in the last week to $3.67 per gallon, a multi-year low.

“It seems fitting that the national average has fallen for four weeks in a row leading up to Labor Day, to its lowest level since February. This gives Americans one last chance to hit the road without gasoline prices playing a major role,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

According to GasBuddy's price reports, the cheapest gas station in Chattanooga yesterday was $2.62/g, the most expensive was $3.19/g, a difference of 57.0 cents per gallon. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $0.30/g, the highest was $4.19/g, a difference of $3.89/g.

“GasBuddy is currently tracking eight states where the average price of gas is already below $3 per gallon, and nearly 20% of gas stations nationwide are selling gas for $2.99 or less,” De Hann added. “Those numbers will look better week by week as we move into fall. GasBuddy's Labor Day travel forecast, released tomorrow, will provide more good news about how many millions of dollars Americans will save compared to last year when traveling by car.”

The national average price of gasoline fell 6.2 cents per gallon over the past week, averaging $3.30 per gallon today. The national average is down 20.7 cents per gallon from last month, and is 49.2 cents per gallon lower than last year, according to data from GasBuddy, compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports from over 150,000 gas stations across the country.
