An aspiring artist has made allegations of sexual assault against actor and producer Baburaj in the wake of the Hema Committee's report on the South Indian film industry.

Against the backdrop of the Hema Committee’s report on the Malaysian film industry, popular actor and producer Baburaj was accused of sexual abuse by a junior artist, reported MathrubhumiAccording to the report, the young artist accused the deputy secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) of sexually abusing her at his residence in Kerala.

Baburaj, however, denied these allegations and said he had expected such claims after the Hema Committee report.

The woman claimed that Baburaj called her to his home in Aluva in 2019 and promised to cast her in a film. She was told that the director and screenwriter of the film would also be present during the visit, the report added.

The young artiste claimed that when she reached the house, she was alone with Baburaj, who then asked her to rest in a room and wait for others. After some time, the Malayam actor came into the room and started sexually abusing her, she alleged.

“He gave me a room to rest and told me that the filmmakers would be coming soon. But after a while he knocked on the door and started physically abusing me,” the woman said.

She said that after this incident, she ran out of the house and never met Baburaj again. She claimed that the actor continued to send her inappropriate messages on WhatsApp, but she never replied.

The women, according to the report, alleged that Baburaj had also harassed other women, but they were too afraid to speak up for themselves. She further said that some men had contacted her for a role in a film starring Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko. She alleged that Chacko had told the men to arrange a meeting with her, another plot to exploit women in the industry.

This comes after the Hema Committee report on the Malayalam film industry prompted many women to come forward and share their experiences of sexual abuse and harassment by powerful men in the industry. Actress Minu Muneer on Monday wrote a detailed Facebook post alleging that she was sexually abused by Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, Idavela Babu and Jayasurya in 2013.
