This Virginia mother and nurse has disappeared. Her husband is accused of killing her.

MANASSAS PARK, Va. – The Northern Virginia community that came together to raise awareness and demand answers when a 28-year-old woman was reported missing earlier this month is now coming together to remember the young mother as her husband faces charges in connection with her disappearance.

Narash Bhatt is due in court on Monday for a bail hearing on charges that he killed his wife Mamta Kafle Bhatt in their home in late July and dragged her body outside.

According to Manassas Park police, Bhatt is charged with concealing a corpse.

Virginia nurse and mother Mamta Kafle Bhatt has disappeared. Her husband is accused of killing her.

A preliminary criminal complaint obtained by CNN affiliate WJLA states: “On or about July 30, 2024, the defendant Naresh Bhatt murdered his wife, Mamta Bhatt.”

According to a video obtained by WJLA, Bhatt was escorted out of the couple's home in handcuffs by police on Thursday morning, a day after police said a search warrant was issued for the apartment.

Since that day, a makeshift memorial made of pictures, flowers and candles has been growing in front of the house, WJLA reported.

Hundreds of friends, nursing colleagues and community members gathered at Signal Hill Park on Saturday to honor Kafle Bhatt, CNN affiliate WTOP reported. The park's gazebo was soon filled with throngs of people who had come to show their support, forcing organizers to move attendees to a hill in the park.

“Mamta has a big, emotional family. We care for her. She is loved. And we also have a big responsibility for Mini Mamta,” event co-organizer and former colleague Sunita Basnet Thapa told WTOP.

Virginia State Senator Danica Roem joined the community on Saturday to show her support, paying tribute to the women who “knew immediately that something was wrong and really, really consistently and persistently spoke out.”

After Kafle Bhatt was first reported missing, friends and community members took to social media to raise awareness of her disappearance and share updates on the investigation. The Nepali American Community Center in Manassas said it has established a line of communication with police to keep up to date with updates in the case.

Friends of Kafle Bhatt also helped launch a GoFundMe campaign to support search efforts.

Kafle Bhatt was seen on July 27 at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center in Manassas, where she worked as a registered nurse in the medical-surgical department. The next day, she spoke with a friend, and July 31 was the last day her husband wanted to see her, according to police.

The health system said it was cooperating with investigators.

“UVA Health is deeply saddened by the devastating news that Mamta Kafle Bhatt has presumed deceased,” Eric Swensen, spokesman for UVA Health Prince William Medical Center, said in a statement to CNN on Friday. “First and foremost, we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Mamta's family, friends and colleagues, and we mourn together with our community and all who knew Mamta.”

Kafle Bhatt's co-workers requested a welfare check when she didn't show up for work, CNN affiliate WUSA reported. Bhatt initially refused to report his wife missing when police conducted the welfare check on Aug. 2, but reported her missing three days later, authorities said in a news release.

Community supports little daughter

Bhatt, a former U.S. Army Reserve automated logistics specialist, is currently being held without bail, according to WJLA.

Some community members said they were not surprised that Bhatt was facing charges in connection with his wife's disappearance.

A neighbor, Ivy Freedman, told CNN affiliate WUSA9: “The mother would not abandon her baby. There was no way she was going to miss her first birthday.”

Community members are making sure that Kafle Bhatt's young daughter is not forgotten in the tragedy.

“The baby is innocent under any circumstances,” Adrian Pokharel, a community member, told WUSA9. “We have to protect her. This is our baby. This is our community's baby. That's how I see it.”

A GoFundMe campaign to support a trust account for the child – whose care is overseen by social services – has already raised nearly $200,000.

Members of Kafle Bhatt's family, who live in Nepal, have received visas and are currently traveling to the United States to seek temporary custody of the baby, Bandita Sharma Dhal, an immigration attorney working with the family, told CNN on Friday.
