Two dead in separate shootings in Kensington overnight – NBC10 Philadelphia

Philadelphia police are investigating after two unrelated shootings in the Kensington neighborhood left a man and a woman dead, officials said.

According to Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace, the first fatal incident occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday when officers were called to the scene of a shooting in the 400 block of East Indiana Avenue.

Here, according to Pace, officers found a man, probably in his early 20s, who had numerous gunshot wounds all over his body.

The man, Pace said, was taken to a nearby hospital, where his condition was assessed shortly after the incident.

“It appears the deceased, the shooting victim, was riding a scooter through East Indiana when a silver or gray car pulled up and individuals got out of the vehicle and began shooting at the shooting victim multiple times, hitting him multiple times at close range,” Pace told an NBC10 crew on the scene. “Several cars parked on that block as well as two homes were also struck by gunfire.”

According to Pace, investigators collected more than 20 spent bullet casings at the scene and the shooting was captured on city surveillance cameras.

Pace said police are still working to determine the motive for this incident and no arrests have been made yet. However, he said the investigation is ongoing.

Woman killed on Kensington Avenue

About half an hour later, a woman was killed in a shooting in the 2500 block of Kensington Avenue, Pace said, presumably because she was trying to break up a fight.

Pace said officers were called to the 2500 block of Kensington Avenue shortly after midnight to find a woman believed to be in her 30s who had been shot at least once in the upper torso.

She was taken to a nearby hospital where, according to Pace, her condition was declared to be over.

According to Pace, the incident occurred outside a business on the block. Surveillance cameras showed a group of men involved in some sort of argument before the shooting.

“The argument then turned physical and one of the men pulled out a gun and pointed it at another man,” Pace said.

However, the woman who was shot was not involved in the argument, but was apparently trying to mediate or end the fight.

“When the person aimed at the person they believed was the target, they ultimately hit the woman,” Pace said.

Pace said police have a suspect in that incident who they are questioning following the shooting.

However, he said the investigation into this incident was still ongoing.
