EtihadWE improves leak detection with cutting-edge technology

Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) is preparing to integrate cutting-edge technology into its water distribution management to significantly reduce leakages across its network, reports Zawya. This initiative is a crucial part of the company's comprehensive transformation roadmap.

Advanced leak detection tools

To enhance its efforts to minimise water waste, EtihadWE will implement sophisticated technologies such as SmartBall and data loggerThese innovative tools are designed to detect potential leaks in the water distribution system in real time. Equipped with advanced sensors, the SmartBall moves through the pipes and transmits data on detected leaks. At the same time, data loggers ensure continuous monitoring of the water flow and identify irregularities that could indicate leaks.

In addition, EtihadWE plans to improve its leak detection capabilities by installing additional meters and narrowing coverage areas using a technique known as district metering. This method enables more accurate leak detection by dividing the network into smaller, more manageable zones, allowing the company to quickly locate and fix leaks, including underground ones.

Combating water shortages (NRW)

In the United Arab Emirates, a country with scarce freshwater resources, efficient water management is crucial. A key aspect of this is reducing non-revenue water (NRW), i.e. water that is lost before it reaches customers due to problems such as equipment malfunctions or inaccurate meter readings. NRW represents a significant challenge as it is water that has already been desalinated and is being transported but is not fully accounted for in terms of volume or revenue.

This initiative is in line with the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 and the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiativewhich both prioritize sustainable and responsible water management practices. EtihadWE's NRW mitigation efforts directly support these national strategies and aim to strengthen the sustainability of the country's water resources.

The company is also nearing completion of a large-scale rollout of smart meters to help it achieve its goals of more efficient water management and improved customer service.

Eng Yousif Al Ali, CEO of EtihadWE, commented: “Our plan to reduce water loss is an integral part of our ambitious five-year transformation plan. By investing in cutting-edge technologies and improving our infrastructure, we aim to strengthen our network in the Northern Emirates and contribute to the UAE’s national water security and sustainability goals.”

COO Eng. Abdulla Al Khemeiri added: “The implementation of modern monitoring and control technologies is essential for proactive and accurate data on leakage rates. This is a critical step in advancing our water management systems and ensuring improved water security.”
