Retired FBI agent killed in EPISD police shooting at Franklin High

A retired FBI agent has been identified by his family as the man killed in a police shooting at Franklin High School during an altercation with an El Paso Independent School District police officer.

Julio Cordero, 56, was a father of four and a decorated federal agent who struggled with deteriorating mental health after leaving the FBI, Cordero's brother, Marco Cordero, told Channel 9-KTSM.

The FBI El Paso Division confirmed that Special Agent Julio Cordero worked in the office from 1996 to 2019. “We are saddened by the loss of one of our own,” said spokeswoman Special Agent Jeanette Harper.

Cordero was the lead agent in Operation Poisoned Pawns, a 2007 investigation into public corruption in which the FBI raided the El Paso County Courthouse, resulting in dozens of convictions, including against three former district judges, county commissioners, school board members and business executives.

“He was a very well-respected law enforcement officer in the city. He made a huge difference,” Marco Cordero told KTSM, explaining that his brother's mental health began to deteriorate after a suicidal man jumped in front of his car and died in 2014. The accident caused memories to resurface of a crash that killed his sister in 1993.

After his retirement, Cordero sometimes went without sleep for days, suffered from paranoia and PTSD symptoms, took medication, felt better, then stopped taking it, and the vicious cycle continued, KTSM reported.

An EPISD police officer shot and killed Julio Cordero during an altercation before 6 a.m. Thursday when Cordero was reportedly breaking windows before classes began at Franklin High School, where his family says his son is a senior.
