4 music videos from the 90s that inspired Billie Eilish's “LUNCH”

If you are not a fan of Billie Eilish yet, we “wish you the best for the rest of your life!” Today, the highly decorated artist is number one in the world with over 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Finally, flowers are raining from her and we are a proud fandom!

Billie is known for consistently releasing incredible music videos, but the video for her hit song “LUNCH” is definitely a highlight. She recently shared a few secrets about the creation of the fan-favorite music video and the inspiration behind the unique visuals.

With “Lunch” I really wanted to create a nostalgic atmosphere, similar to the older 90s videos I grew up with, and I wanted it to almost feel like it was shot on an older camera.

Artists who inspired the mood of the video include Biggie, Tupac, Spice Girls, Green Day and My Chemical Romance.

Billie Eilish

Here are 5 music videos from the 90s and early 2000s that inspired Billie to create “LUNCH,” but are also favorites of our fans here at the Hive!

The Spice Girls

Who isn't a Spice Girls fan? Our favorite music video of theirs is “Say You'll Be Mine” and we can definitely imagine that this could have served as inspiration for “LUNCH.” The camera angles and pops of color are so 90s and we love how Billie incorporated similar themes into her video as well.

Green Day

Green Day is one of those bands that we're sure everyone reading this has heard at least once. Their songs will live on forever and we're glad Billie grew up listening to them perform! Our favorite Green Day music video is “Hitchin' A Ride,” which was released in 1997 (no, we weren't even born then).

Tupac

The one and only Tupac Shakur lives on as an inspiration for Billie Eilish. She has spoken about him as a musical inspiration a few times and we can see that the music video for “Hit 'Em Up” was 100% the inspiration for “LUNCH”. The white walls, the close-ups of the camera, the striped shirts, multiple versions of yourself dancing in one frame, and the list goes on!

Biggie

The Notorious BIG, also known as Biggie, ruled the hip hop world in the 90s and we wish we were still around to witness his greatness live! Our favorite Biggie music video is “Mo Money Mo Problems”. Here we see similar themes to the earlier videos, such as close-ups and wide camera angles and bright outfits, usually in red, yellow and blue.

My Chemical Romance

Finally, we have to talk about My Chemical Romance. Their music still inspires so many people today, one of them being Billie Eilish. Billie is a child of the 2000s after all, so we can definitely understand her love for MCR! Here, the videos get a little darker, but they still cover the same themes that we love to see in our favorite music videos. Our favorite MCR video is definitely “I'm Not Okay (I Promise).” We miss the MTV days!
