Former Florida deputy allegedly killed Air Force soldier in custody

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WALA) – The former Okaloosa County deputy charged with manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of a black senior U.S. Air Force airman is in custody.

Former Okaloosa County Deputy Eddie Duran Jr. is in custody, according to jail records.(WALA)

Okaloosa County Jail logs show Eddie Duran Jr., 38, was arrested today around 3 p.m. Jail logs show he was denied bail and is awaiting a hearing.

Roger Fortson was killed when then-Okaloosa County Sheriff's Deputy Duran went to Fortson's apartment while responding to a disturbance call that was later determined to be false. Body camera video shows Duran knocking on Fortson's apartment door several times. Fortson opened the door while holding his handgun at his side with his hand pointed downward. Fortson owned the gun legally.

According to authorities, Duran shot him several times before ordering Fortson to drop the weapon

Duran was fired in late May after the sheriff's office completed its investigation.
