Russian missiles and drones strike Ukraine, killing at least two people | World

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Nighttime Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine killed at least two people and sparked fires on the outskirts of the capital, officials said Tuesday, a day after a major attack that hit energy facilities across the country.

According to Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city's military administration, two people were killed in an attack on a residential building in Kryvyi Rihstruck, a mining and industrial city in southern Ukraine.

In the Kyiv region, which has been struggling with power outages since Monday's storm, air raid warnings were issued five times during the night. The regional administration said air defenses had destroyed all drones and missiles fired by Russia, but falling debris had sparked forest fires.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attacks by more than 100 missiles and a similar number of drones on Monday as “disgusting”.

The attacks hit civilian infrastructure and large parts of the country were targeted, he said.

“The energy infrastructure has once again become a target of Russian terrorists,” Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Monday.

He called on Ukraine's allies to supply the country with long-range weapons and allow their use against targets inside Russia.

“To stop the barbaric shelling of Ukrainian cities, it is necessary to destroy the place from which the Russian missiles are fired,” Shmyhal said. “We are counting on the support of our allies and will definitely make Russia pay for it.”

President Joe Biden called the Russian attack on energy infrastructure “outrageous” and said he had “reprioritized U.S. air defense exports to be delivered to Ukraine first.” He also said the U.S. would “supply energy equipment to Ukraine to repair its systems and build the resilience of Ukraine's energy grid.”

The Russian Defense Ministry said the attacks involved the use of “air- and sea-based long-range precision weapons and drones against critical energy infrastructure facilities that support the operation of Ukraine's military-industrial complex. All intended targets were hit.”

At least four people were killed in the attacks on Monday.

Meanwhile, in Russia, officials reported the launch of four Ukrainian missiles over the Kursk region, where Russian forces are battling Ukrainian troops that invaded by surprise this month.

Fighting in the region has raised concerns about the nuclear power plant there. Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said he would visit the plant on Tuesday.
