Official: Barcelona loses another defender due to injury

After only two games of the season, injuries are piling up at FC Barcelona.

After missing Andreas Christensen last week due to an Achilles tendon injury, the Catalans will face Rayo Vallecano tonight without another defender – Eric Garcia, the club confirmed.

“Eric Garcia, first team player, has plantar fasciitis in his right foot. His development will determine when he can return to training,” says the club's statement.

Garcia returned to Barcelona after a one-year loan to Girona and played a few minutes as a substitute in the first two league games against Valencia and Athletic Club.

In recent days, however, a possible move of the central defender back to Girona had already been linked, with a possible transfer for 15 million euros being discussed.

It is currently unclear how long the defender will be out. The recovery time for such an injury is between a few weeks and a few months.

Further updates on the situation are expected, but Barcelona are currently in a precarious position with Garcia, Christensen and Ronald Araujo missing from defense.

This leaves Hansi Flick with Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez as his main options, and with Jules Kounde likely to continue playing at right-back, the manager has named young players Sergi Dominguez and Andres Cuenca in the squad for today's game in Vallecas.
