Job fair planned after announced closure of East Providence plant

EAST PROVIDENCE – The city government, in partnership with state agencies and a local manufacturing company, is planning a job fair for the 205 workers who will be laid off at a plant that makes parts for electric vehicles that is set to close.

Singapore-based Ennovi filed a federal layoff notice with its state on July 26, announcing up to 205 layoffs at its East Providence plant by early 2025.

East Providence Mayor Roberto DaSilva said he had met with company representatives.

“The good news is there is no set date and everything will be closed on one day and everyone will be gone,” DaSilva said. “It will be a staggered situation.”

Production is expected to continue for some time into 2025 as the company works to fill orders for types of production it has not yet consolidated at its plants in New Jersey or Mexico, he said.

“They'll leave it here until they're done,” he said.

Interested in purchasing the system

The manufacturing facility at 231 Ferris Avenue, which is located between a residential area and other industrial plants, could soon be bought by another manufacturer that has expressed interest in it, DaSilva said.

“I don't want it to be empty, so I hope the sale becomes a reality,” he said.

According to city property records, Interplex, as the company was formerly known, bought the 120,000-square-foot factory building in 2007 for $500,000. The city currently estimates its value at $3.6 million ($1.3 million for the land, $2.2 million for the building). The building has 18,560 square feet of office space and 101,375 square feet of manufacturing space.

The site is located opposite a residential area and the Wolf School and borders a sports field.

Interplex spun off Ennovi as a standalone company in October 2023 to focus on “the design, development and engineering of innovative interconnect solutions for battery, power and signaling systems for next-generation electric vehicles,” a press release said at the time.

This was preceded by the purchase of Interplex by the private investment group Blackstone in January 2022.

The company consolidates its production

Ennovi is closing the East Providence plant to consolidate all of its North American production at plants in Northvale, New Jersey, and Jalisco, Mexico, as part of an effort to “continue to focus on the automotive industry,” spokeswoman Sarah MacKenzie of public relations firm Publitek wrote in an email.

The company has promised to give preference to internal candidates applying to the other two North American production sites, she wrote.

Job fair in planning

Igus Inc., a German company that primarily manufactures plastic industrial components, has agreed to host a job fair at its office in Rumford, where its American subsidiary is based. The date has not yet been set, however. The Igus building is right next to the Ennovi plant, which is being closed.
