Correctional officer arrested and fired in smuggling investigation, says TPSO

AMITE, Louisiana – The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday the arrest of a former deputy in connection with a contraband investigation at the county jail.

According to TPSO, 21-year-old Tajah Phillips was arrested after several confirmed tips from the public regarding the “sale and provision” of illegal items to inmates.

Phillips was arrested Tuesday on one of each of the following charges:

Phillips, who had worked for TPSO Corrections since June, was immediately fired by Sheriff Gerald Sticker following his arrest.

“One of the main focuses of my tenure has been the prison – not just its security, but its functionality and operations. Success in all of these areas depends on the people who work there,” Sticker said. “While we are actively improving the professional development, standards and expectations of our correctional officers with certified training, this abuse of authority occurs. The habits of the past have no place in this culture change we are establishing at TPSO.”

The TPSO said it is grateful for the public's assistance in this case and asks anyone with information regarding a crime to please report it directly to the Sheriff's Office or call Crimestoppers anonymously at 1-800-554-5245.

The investigation is still ongoing.
