GLS Germany completes test run with hydrogen truck

GLS Germany has successfully completed a 30,000-kilometer test of a Hyundai Xcient hydrogen fuel cell truck with an Allison 4000 Series fully automatic transmission. Over 100,000 packages were delivered with this environmentally friendly vehicle – an important step towards sustainable logistics in Europe.

Key highlights:

  • 30,000 kilometers covered from GLS Germany with the hydrogen fuel cell truck.
  • Over 100,000 packages delivered in the greater Cologne area.
  • The truck was used for Long-distance travel between Cologne and Mannheim since March 2024.
  • Allison 4000 Series™ automatic transmission drives the Hyundai Xcient Truck.
  • No breakdowns or problems was reported during the test and highlighted the reliability of the vehicle.
  • Hydrogen fuel cell system offers 180 kilowatts (241 hp) and a 350 kilowatt electric motor for improved performance.
  • Agility and quiet operation Make the truck suitable for night deliveries in populated areas.

Oualid Hamza, Operations Manager at GLS, was convinced by the technology: “We are open to new technologies and want to explore the different possibilities. The main thing is that it works.”

The truck’s impressive performance, including fast acceleration without loss of traction. Gero Liebig, regional manager at GLS, highlighted the easy maneuverability and quiet operation: “It’s great how agile the truck is and how easy and precise it is to maneuver thanks to the automatic transmission.”

The patented torque converter has contributed significantly to maximizing the truck's efficiency by using a smaller drive motor, increasing range and reducing vehicle costs. Heidi Schutte, Vice President of EMEA, APAC and South America Sales at Allison Transmission, emphasized the company's commitment to Sustainability and provision of diverse drive solutions.
