Netflix announces scary true crime drama “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story”

With its upcoming series, Netflix delves deep into one of the most notorious true crime cases in recent history. Monster: The story of Lyle and Erik MenendezThe streaming giant just released a new teaser trailer ahead of the show's mid-September release, and it's already generating a lot of excitement. Because let's be honest, who doesn't love a good, twisted true crime drama that makes you question your own family dynamics?

This series is the second installment in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan's true crime anthology and promises to retell the dark, chilling story of the Menendez brothers. For those who need a refresher (or weren't watching TV in the '90s), Lyle and Erik Menendez made headlines around the world after murdering their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills mansion on August 20, 1989. You know, your average family drama, right?

In this new teaser, audiences get a glimpse into the dysfunctional family dynamic that may have led to the crime. Javier Bardem plays patriarch José Menendez, while Chloë Sevigny plays mother Kitty. Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez take on the roles of Erik and Lyle, the infamous brothers whose story fascinated – and horrified – the world.

The teaser doesn't hold back, opening with the brothers arriving at their parents' estate, followed by gunshots. Not exactly the warmest of welcomes home. The series promises to delve into the grim details of the trial, in which the prosecution portrayed the brothers as greedy killers, while Lyle and Erik claimed years of abuse drove them to the crime. Even today, the debate over who the real “monsters” are causes controversy.

In the trailer's most haunting moment, a family photo is interrupted by Kitty's strained voiceover asking José, “I need to know what's going on with you and the boys.” The tension only increases when José insists, “I'm going to fix this family.” Well, spoiler alert: It didn't quite work out.
