The Cybertruck doesn't seem to live up to Elon Musk's promise that it can “drive like a boat for short periods of time.” Many Cybertruck owners complain that their trucks leak during routine car washes and rain, let alone be able to serve as an amphibious vehicle.

The area where leaks constantly occur is above the roof of the truck. More specifically, where the rear window connects to the bed cover.

Although several Cybertruck owners raised this issue with Tesla service technicians, they were rebuffed with the response that the vault leak was “within specification.”

At least that was the case until now. However, according to a Tesla owner who recently inquired about the issue, Tesla seems to be working on a solution to the Cybertruck water ingress problem.

Amitava Michael Kundu went to a Tesla service center to fix problems he discovered with his truck after delivery. While he was there, Amitava also asked Tesla service technicians to investigate a leak on his Cybertruck.

Amitava writes: “I took my Cybertruck to be repaired after delivery for some non-functional components and asked them to look at the water entry point above the bed cover. This was their response. Does anyone have any idea what this possible 'general solution' could actually be?”

Below, Amitava shared a screenshot of the service summary he received from Tesla regarding the water ingress issue.

Here is what Tesla wrote…

“Exterior cladding

Technician's notes: It has been discovered that there is a gap at the top of the tonneau cover that exposes the tonneau cover's water drainage channel. A general solution is currently being worked on but is not yet available.

Since the load area cover is not completely waterproof, some water penetration into the loading area is normal. This becomes visible in heavy rain.

No faults were found with the tonneau switch. Since the new sail application comes with a new switch, the recommendation is to currently monitor for further issues and record timestamps when faults occur.”

Amitava was unable to find an immediate solution to the leaky cargo cover issue. Importantly, Tesla says: “A general solution is currently being worked on, but is not yet available.”

This sounds promising, but unfortunately Tesla has not provided any further details about what the solution will look like and when it will arrive.

There are also questions about whether this improvement will be introduced on new Cybertrucks in production or whether current Cybertruck owners will receive this retrofit.

Since this is the first time we're hearing about this upcoming “fix,” we don't have much information yet. In the meantime, however, a Cybertruck owner who experienced the same issues with the leaky vault offers a temporary solution.

John Zweber writes…

I fixed my water leak with electrical tape on the bottom where the roof glass meets the wide trim piece in front of the bed cover. The bed cover is not leaking. Those brown strips are like foam gasket, but a small gasket seal along the bottom borders the glass. I put the electrical center on the brown gasket/insulation. Then I put another piece on and used it to cover half of the electrical tape on the side closest to the bed cover. Now I have no more leaks in the bed. This morning we had a torrential downpour with 60 mph winds and when I checked near the cover the bed was completely dry. The only water came when I opened the tailgate and some of it ran off the end of the cover into the bed.

Jon also posted a picture of his DIY repair in the Tesla Cybertruck Facebook group. I recommend you head there if you're having the same water ingress issue on your Cybertruck.

Overall, it's disappointing that Cybertruck owners are dealing with issues like water leaks this early on, but let me know what you think about the issue in the comments.
