Road rage in Oak Lawn, elder abuse in Mokena

BURGLARY: A residential surveillance system in the 9300 block of Thomas Avenue allowed the homeowner's son to observe an attempted burglary on Aug. 14, ask a neighbor to intervene and notify police, while also providing evidence, police said. Ahmad Mohammed Saleh, 35, 9200 block of Beloit Avenue, Bridgeview, was arrested and subsequently charged with attempted residential burglary, police said.

ASSAULT: Mohammed Chreide, 40, of Oak Lawn, was arrested Aug. 24 and charged with assault and violation of a restraining order in the 8800 block of Harlem Avenue, police said.

Burbank

SEX OFFENDER: Thomas B. Simpson, 51, homeless, was arrested Aug. 12 and subsequently charged with failing to report a change in employment within the required three-day period, police said. Simpson failed to report his employment at a business in the 5400 block of 79th Street when he registered as a sex offender with Chicago police Aug. 7, police said. Simpson was convicted of aggravated sexual abuse in Vermillion County when he was 18 and the victim was 15, according to the Illinois State Police's online sex offender registry.

PHONE ROBBERY: Ashraf M. Atwan, 27, 7800 block of Lorel Avenue, Burbank, was arrested Aug. 13 and charged with robbery after he forcibly took two cell phones from another person on that block, police said.

Evergreen Park

ATTEMPTED ROBBERY: A woman was knocked to the ground but held onto her purse during an attempted robbery in the parking lot of a shopping club in the 9400 block of Western Avenue on Aug. 8, police said. Officers identified a car involved that turned out to be stolen in Chicago.

IDENTITY THEFT: Shawn Black, 55, of Chicago, was arrested Aug. 12 and charged with identity theft after he attempted to withdraw $5,000 from a customer's account at Old National Bank, 2400 95th St., while presenting a fake driver's license identifying himself as the customer, police said.

ASSAULT: Kimi S. Rance, 44, of Chicago, was arrested Aug. 23 and charged with assault after she shoved an employee during an argument in the parking lot outside Walmart, 2500 95th St., police said.

Mokena

ELDERLY ABUSE: A 22-year-old Mokena man is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Friday. He is charged with three counts of assault on a person over 60. Andrew J. Stecko, 19400 block of 116th Street, was arrested Aug. 15 and remained jailed on the orders of a Will County judge, online court records show.

Oak lawn

ILLEGAL TWERKING: A Chicago woman was arrested Aug. 10 and charged with public indecency after she pulled down her pants to expose herself while “twerking” in front of an officer in the 8700 block of Cicero Avenue, police said. Charnell R. Newell, 26, who also yelled curses and racial slurs at an officer while preventing his squad from leaving, was additionally charged with resisting arrest after attempting to flee, police said.

ILLEGAL WEAPON: Jeanette Ann Hughes, 50, of Westchester, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after officers recovered a loaded 9 mm handgun and an additional loaded magazine in her vehicle during an Aug. 16 traffic stop at the corner of 95th Street and 54th Avenue and determined she did not have a state firearms permit, police said.

ROAD RAGE: A couple reported to police on Aug. 17 that a man drove behind their car, repeatedly changed lanes, then stopped next to their vehicle, yelled at them and pointed a gun at them before driving away, police said. Mounted surveillance cameras identified their vehicle, but not the other vehicle, police said.

STREET SHOOTING: The driver of a car and his passenger escaped injury from at least five shots fired by the driver of the car ahead of them at 1:20 a.m. on Kenton Avenue near 93rd Street on Aug. 18, police said. The driver who reported the incident said he followed the other vehicle around the block because he suspected it was involved in the theft of a gun from his vehicle on Aug. 12. Officers estimated damage to his car at $1,000, police said.

UNWILLING ARREST: Baraa Qaisi, 24, of 94th Street in Oak Lawn, was arrested Aug. 19 and charged with aggravated false imprisonment after holding a family member and another person at gunpoint in her home for five hours, police said. The estranged family member and another person had been invited to the home for a reconciliation, police said.

HOSPITAL ASSAULT: Jessica M. Chize, 36, of an undisclosed block of Ridgeland Avenue, Chicago Ridge, was arrested Aug. 20 at Advocate Christ Medical Center and charged with assault after she punched, pulled to the bed and choked an emergency room worker, police said.

Orlando Park

STORE THEFT: A Schaumburg woman wanted in California for organized shoplifting and two counts of grand larceny was arrested Aug. 9 after stealing cosmetics totaling $2,617.89 from Jewel-Osco, 9350 159th St., police said. Dorinta Velcu, 28, was charged with grand larceny and served with the Contra Costa County warrant, police said.

TEENAGER ARRESTED: Officers arrested a teen while responding to a report of shots fired on Aug. 21 and 22, police said. The teen, who is being withheld because of his age, was arrested after officers found the handgun he lost during the pursuit, police said. The teen was part of a group that fled on bicycles while shouting gang slogans after officers thwarted their attempt to steal the street sign at the corner of 150th Street and Sacramento Avenue, police said. Officers later determined the four or five shots had been fired into the air; no one was injured and no houses were hit, police said.
