Grant County officials decide whether a brawl investigation should be classified as a hate crime

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Grant County authorities are investigating whether a fight they are investigating can be classified as a hate crime, the Grant County Sheriff's Office said in a report released Wednesday.

The sheriff's office said it learned of the fight shortly after 1 a.m. on August 18 and said the video contained racial slurs. Investigators determined that several people, including both children and adults, were involved in the fight.

The fight occurred on Sandy Lane in Jamestown Township, about 13 miles southwest of Cuba City.

Officials said 20-year-old Anthony Drapeau was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and assault. The Hazel Green man has since posted bail, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities noted that other people could face charges of assault, disturbing the peace and property damage. The Grant County Sheriff's Office said it will forward the evidence to prosecutors to determine whether to add a hate crime charge, which could result in higher fines and prison time.
