Get the training you need for the job you want

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Toni McLawhorn, Business & Development Manager at the Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board, joined us at Here @ Home to talk about how some people need the training they need to get the jobs they want.

With children returning to school, some parents and guardians may be thinking about going back to work.

McLawhorn explains that everyone has different needs and that there are financial resources available to train individuals and then work with them to find a position, be it an internship or a job.

They also help people when it comes to getting around. For example, if your car breaks down, they may be able to provide funds to help pay for repairs so getting around is no longer a barrier, she explains.

Interested individuals should contact their local employment service to start the conversation.

For the Greater Roanoke area, the best way to start is to fill out a simple online form. Here is the link: grwdb.jotform.com/morgan/wioa-title-i-interest-form.

How do you help companies find new employees and how do you help job seekers find jobs?

There is also a statewide website where they share job openings: Virginia Workforce Connection: vawc.virginia.gov/

By also sharing job information through the media and social media posts and our staff working with job seekers, they help companies get their job openings out more quickly to people who may have the right skills.

They also host recruitment events with individual companies in their centers, as well as larger recruitment events for several companies.

An event is planned for September 4 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Downtown Roanoke business district at the City Market Building.
