Key player of the Baltimore Orioles misses rest of the season due to serious injury

If the Baltimore Orioles want to win the World Series, they will have to do without a key player.

Already injured infielder Jorge Mateo is now out for the rest of the season after a major operation.

According to Orioles insider Dan Connolly:

According to the Orioles: Jorge Mateo underwent a successful reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament of the left elbow with internal splinting and flexor repair today. The surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister at Trinity Park Surgery Center in Arlington, Texas. Unfortunately, this officially ends his season.

While it's different for outfielders than pitchers, Mateo will most likely still miss part of next season. While someone like Bryce Harper would have the opportunity to return as a designated hitter, Mateo does not. He needs to be able to play in the field, as much of his value comes from the ability to run and play multiple infield positions.

The hope is that by completing this procedure now, he may be ready as soon as 2025.

The 29-year-old had a .229 batting average with five home runs, 18 RBIs and 13 stolen bases this year, and his running ability could help the O's as they attempt to capture the American League East this season.

In his sixth major league season with the San Diego Padres and Orioles, he achieved a lifetime hitter average of .224.

He will be with the O's in 2025, but will be a free agent at the end of next season.
