74-year-old man charged with aggression while driving after incident that led to shooting outside bank

ALEXANDER COUNTY, NC (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A 74-year-old man has been charged after a shooting in a bank parking lot resulted from a road rage incident.

At approximately 9:34 a.m., the Alexander County Sheriff's Office received a call about a shooting in the parking lot of the Taylorsville Savings Bank in Hiddenite. The call states that two men were involved in a verbal argument and one of them pulled out a gun and shot the other.

When officers arrived on scene, they found one of the men in the parking lot.

It was determined that this occurred following an incident of road rage in Hiddenite.

Following the investigation, officers determined that Thomas Richard Smith Jr. of Hiddenite pulled out a gun and fired shots in the bank's parking lot.

No injuries or property damage were reported.

Smith was charged with assault by pointing a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon and being armed and causing fear and terror to the public. He was given a $7,500 bond, which he is currently exempt from paying.

His first court date is scheduled for October 28, 2024.
