1 dead after police-involved shooting in Roanoke: Officials

Roanoke authorities said one person was killed in a police-involved shooting early Thursday morning.

According to authorities, Roanoke police responded to a 911 call around 12:53 a.m. reporting a domestic altercation involving an armed individual at an apartment in the 700 block of 29th Street NW.

When officers arrived, they found a woman with severe cuts outside the home. They were led into the apartment where they encountered the male suspect, who was still armed with a knife, officers said.

Officials said the suspect continued to advance toward officers despite repeated verbal orders to drop the weapon. To de-escalate the situation, officers deployed a taser. When the suspect continued to advance and ignored commands, officers fired their service weapons as they retreated, striking the man.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident, officials said.

According to officials, Virginia State Police have been notified per department policy and will begin an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. Their names will be released within 72 hours.
