PS5 Pro leak reveals alleged name and design of the console

A new report on the PS5 Pro has allegedly revealed new information about the yet-to-be-announced console.

In an article on Dealabs, reliable PlayStation leaker billbil-kun said that the final name of the mid-gen refresh is indeed PS5 Pro, and published a sketch of the design based on the supposedly final packaging box of the new console.

The sketch above shows a console design similar to the existing PS5 Slim, in white and with two USB-C ports and a power button on the front. However, there are three black stripes in the middle of the PS5 Pro's outer layer, which are not present on the base models. Billbill-kun noted that the PS5 Pro appears slightly thicker than the PS5 Slim.

The PS5 Pro seen by billbill-kun does not have a disc drive. It is unclear whether Sony plans to release a version of the console with a disc drive. A price has not been announced. The controller remains the basic DualSense.

billbill-kun expects Sony to announce a PS5 Pro in the first half of September 2024. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.

Rumors of a PS5 Pro have been around for some time, with reports pointing to a November release. In March, alleged PS5 Pro specs leaked online, which IGN confirmed to be genuine. The main improvements are to the CPU, which is said to be identical to the CPU in the standard PS5, but with a “high CPU frequency mode.” This is reportedly a 10% increase to 3.85 GHz. The GPU, on the other hand, is said to offer faster rendering and higher quality ray tracing at 33.5 teraflops. The standard PS5 offers 10.28 teraflops. However, a direct comparison between the PS5 and PS5 Pro would be around 10.28 versus 16 to 17 teraflops.

What's particularly interesting is that the PS5 Pro is said to feature an upscaling/antialiasing solution called PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling), a custom machine learning architecture, and an AI accelerator. In addition, the PS5 Pro has a removable disk drive and 1TB of storage space.

This “boosted” update is said to increase interest in PS5 ahead of the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2025. As IGN reported, A lot depends on GTA 6And not just for Rockstar and Take-Two.

Sony, of course, has experience in releasing a Pro version of its consoles. The PS4 Pro, for example, was launched in November 2016, three years after the PS4 was released. PS5 Pro launch in November would be released four years after the launch of the PS5 in November 2020.

The release of the PS5 Pro comes amid declining sales of the PS5 itself. In May, Sony said PS5 sales had peaked after the console entered “the final phase of its life cycle.”
