Man allegedly killed his mother in a Sacramento County home

The son of a woman killed in Sacramento County was arrested in connection with his mother's death after refusing to leave the house for hours, officials said Thursday. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said John Martinez is charged with hitting his mother with a shovel and then running her over with a vehicle and trying to set her on fire. He is now in county jail on murder charges. Officers went to the 11500 block of Alta Mesa Road in the southern part of the county near Galt on Wednesday, the sheriff's office said. A body was discovered on the ground at the property on LiveCopter 3 footage. The property included a residence and several outbuildings. A KCRA 3 crew saw two armored vehicles drive onto the property. SWAT and other officers were at the home for hours Wednesday afternoon and evening trying to make contact with the woman's 29-year-old son. Shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, officials said Martinez was found inside the home and detained. KCRA 3's on-scene team observed a man being placed in the back seat of a police vehicle in handcuffs. The sheriff's office said it arrested and detained Martinez the next morning. SWAT officers later cleared the scene. On Thursday morning, reporter Mike TeSelle noted officers were still at the scene. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said John Martinez is accused of beating his mother with a shovel, then running her over with a car and attempting to set her on fire. He is now in county jail on murder charges.

According to the sheriff's office, officers went to the 11500 block of Alta Mesa Road in the southern part of the county near Galt on Wednesday.

A KCRA 3 crew saw two armored vehicles drive onto the property.

The SWAT team and other officers were in the house for hours Wednesday afternoon and evening, attempting to make contact with the woman's 29-year-old son.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, officials said Martinez was found and detained inside the home. The KCRA 3 crew on scene observed a man being placed in handcuffs in the back seat of a police vehicle.

The sheriff's office said Martinez was arrested and taken into custody the next morning.

SWAT officers later cleared the scene.

On Thursday morning, reporter Mike TeSelle found that officers were still on site.
