No starting QB announced for UC Davis

As expected, the headline from the release of the Cal depth chart for UC Davis is… no headline! The battle for the starting quarterbackIt is still uncertain and we will be on guard until kick-off. (If you haven't seen Thomas' predictions yet, click here and compare them!).

Let's go through it position by position.

  • Quarterback: Fernando Mendoza and Chandler Rogers are listed as co-starters. Both quarterbacks have played fairly evenly in fall camp, with Mendoza looking better in some practices and Rogers looking better in others. It wouldn't be surprising to see both against UC Davis.

  • Running back: Jaydn Ott starts, Jaivian Thomas and Kardarius Calloway are tied for second, and Byron Cardwell are all listed as possible replacements. Each of them had standout moments in camp and all will likely get opportunities.

  • Wide receiver: The receiver lineup is more flexible than ever. Jonathan Brady, who spent a lot of time with the first unit in the fall, is on the outside behind Kyion Grayes. It looks like a war for the slots is brewing, with Mavin Anderson and Trond Grizzell listed as options since Mikey Matthews and Josiah Martin missed much of training camp — even though they're slot options, too. So many options! Nyziah Hunter moving up to the two is something to keep an eye on.

  • Tight end: Jack Endries seems secure as a starter at the TE position, and Corey Dyches will likely play often.

  • Offensive line: Sioape Vatikani's early injury in training camp didn't affect his spot in the rankings at right guard, but don't be surprised to see Braden Miller, Bastian Swinney, Matthew Wykoff or Trent Ramsey step in if he's not 100%. Transfer Will McDonald appears to have won the hotly contested center job, but I suspect Wykoff will get playing time somewhere. Nick Morrow seemed secure at left tackle, but Victor Stoffel looks to be a tough challenge. This will be an ongoing battle to keep an eye on.

  • Defensive Tackle: Less surprising is that Wisconsin's TJ Bollers and Notre Dame's Aidan Keanaaina slot into the back two along with Nate Burrell and Ricky Correia. That's a lot of talent on offense to fill gaps, perhaps the most in half a decade. Stanley Saole-Mckenzie aren't bad third options either.

  • Full-back: David Reese and Xavier Carlton are confirmed as starters, the very capable substitutes Cheikhsaliou Fall, Myles Williams and Ryan McCulloch are in reserve, and Serigne Tounkara is ready. A very interesting unit with high performance values.

  • Centre-back: Expect the two starters, Cade Uluave and Teddye Buchanan, to take the majority of the snaps, with perhaps a little backup from Hunter Barth and Aaron Hampton. This is a very thin unit, but the two best options have at least proven to be the best defenders we have.

  • Corner: As expected for a long time, Marcus Harris has secured one of the two starting spots alongside Nohl Williams. But Lu-Magia Hearns, Ja'ir Smith and Collin Gamble should also have plenty of opportunity to get on the field.

  • Security: Craig Woodson and Miles Williams are the early starters, but behind them stand out Isaiah Crosby, Ryan Yaites and Cam Sidney, all of whom are capable of putting up numbers. As always, the Takers seem to be pretty strong and able to handle setbacks.

  • Step: No big surprises: Transfer Ryan Coe looks to be a huge addition in terms of placekicking and kickoffs, and returning punter Lachlan Wilson is expected to knock it out of the park.

  • Returnees: It's a four-way battle going on! Mikey Matthews seemed to be the best returner, but an injury has likely pushed him back to center field. Jonathan Brady, Marcus Harris and Nohl Williams have stepped in to fill the gaps. Hopefully we'll see fewer fair catches!

Overall, there aren't any major holes, except for the big one at quarterback. There are some question marks at offensive line and inside linebacker, but compared to previous Golden Bear incarnations, this feels like a pretty complete unit.
