Teen driver identified in Clairemont Mesa crash that killed SDPD officer

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego County Coroner's Office on Wednesday determined the identity of the teenage driver who was killed in a fierce police chase late Monday night that left one San Diego police officer dead and another seriously injured.

According to the coroner's office, 16-year-old Edgar Giovanny Oviedo was driving a BMW sedan eastbound on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard at around 11:30 p.m. on August 26 when he collided sideways with a San Diego Police Department patrol car traveling northbound at the Doliva Drive intersection.

The DMV confirmed to ABC 10News Thursday afternoon that Oviedo does not have a driver's license.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene performed life-saving measures while transporting Oveido to a local hospital, but he died upon arrival.

The driver of the police vehicle, 30-year-old police officer Austin Machitar, died at the scene of the accident. The passenger, 27-year-old police officer Zach Martinez, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

SDPD officials said the BMW initially fled from officers attempting to stop the driver for speeding.
